The successful Young Leaders project in 2024, highlighted the effectiveness of the peer education model as a means of training young people at the appropriate level for their needs.
With an increased level of violence within the region and the successful StreetDoctors methodology proven, the 2025 project focused on delivering a new peer to peer approach in addressing the mental health consequences of violence, with a focus on a public health lens and early interventions.
StreetDoctors training enables young people to recognise common emotional and behavioural responses to violence in themselves and others, which supports the mental health consequences of experiencing violence and the ability to seek support as early as possible.
- 19 young people aged 14–22 attended the 4-day training (including 6 aged 14–15)
- Participants included existing StreetDoctors Anguilla leaders and new recruits eager to learn and make a difference.
- Training programmes were piloted and co-delivered to 63 young people.
- 5 focus groups and 6+ individual interviews were held to inform programme design.
- A bespoke Anguilla Peer-to-Peer Mental Health Training Pack was created
This project has laid the foundation for a youth-driven, trauma-informed violence reduction model in Anguilla. By equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to act – helping to create a generation of peer leaders ready to drive positive change for their communities and beyond.
